The story behind the song

There isn’t much to the lyrics or structure of this song, and that was 100% on purpose. Sometimes, I enjoy writing something that’s silly or easy to play and sing, or both. I also enjoyed the note of dirtiness that I brought in here and there. Ultimately, this song is about trying to woo a woman to bed, and since I’ve been married or in a monogamous relationship for pretty much all of my song-writing career, it’s safe to say I was thinking about how to woo my sweetie, which is a good thing for us fellers to ponder, I do believe.

Notes from the Studio

Mac Bartinelead vocals and rhythm guitar

Soup A is one of the simplest songs on the album, and we decided as we were arranging it for the stage to fill it up with some old fashioned trading of solos. We stuck with that in the studio, and then I had a wild hair and asked Seva to create the breakdown that’s between Jules’s keys solo and Brian’s lap steel solo. I also let a little more of my Southern drawl out during this one, especially in choruses. Overall, this was a fun song for the band to experiment with in studio!

2017 Memphis Gibson ES with Bigsby Tremolo, 1979 Fender Deluxe Reverb amp with Celestion Speaker. Got to use my Boss Harmonizer on this one including the OD pedals as well as the wah to get that funky 70’s porn music effect. Seva got me to use the wah and the tremolo simultaneously to play the lines from the chorus. I mirrored Brian’s slide with it somewhat to really amplify the sliding bluesy lines. This is Mac’s swagger at its best! And what groove the old suburban white guy can bring! Fun to play like a Zeppelin-esque tune.
