Tracking: Playing Lonely Lady is all about giving the song lots and lots of space, and we brought lots of spaciness into how we played Lonely in the studio. Singing it was a little tough for Mac - in our original 3 takes that we did as a band at the beginning, he was singing the lyrics more crisply, and it sounded very wrong to him afterwards: "When I went in to re-record this track, I extended each word as much as I felt like I could without it sounding weird. It’s a decision that gave the song exactly what I hoped it would - more space and lushness added to the track."
Mac’s Songwriting Notes: I wrote Lonely Lady shortly after my maternal grandfather died in the early 2000s. My mom’s family is from the DC area, and I took a trip to spend some time with Grand Dot (they wanted to be called Grand Dot and Grand Bob). Gran had gone to bed upstairs, and I was downstairs in the living room where the TV was. I wasn’t really looking for anything, but I turned on the TV and Speed Racer was on. It was kind of distracting, and I was worrying about my grandmother and how lonely she was without Grand Bob, her husband of nearly 70 years, and Lonely Lady came out. It wasn’t about Gran so much as driven by how sad I felt for her. I think Speed Racer distracted me enough that I just got down snippets of lines, and then I fell in love with how sparse it was, because it fit the moment for me like a glove.
Lyrics
Hold me
Lonely
Lady
Save me
Help me love myself and this pitching sea
Pull me close
Don't set me free
Whisper things
Soft and sweet
So damn close
To what we need
Hold me lonely lady
I see
Only
You, lonely
Lady
Help me see myself for what might still be
Pull me close
Don't set me free
Whisper things
Soft and sweet
So damn close
To what we need
Hold me lonely lady
Hold me lonely lady
Pull me close
Don't set me free
Whisper things
Soft and sweet
So damn close
To what we need
Hold me lonely lady
