Tracking: Soup A is one of the simplest songs on the album, and we decided as we were arranging it for the stage to fill it up with some old fashioned trading of solos. We stuck with that in the studio, and then Mac had a wild hair and asked Seva to create the breakdown that’s between Jules’s keys solo and Brian’s lap steel solo. Mac also let a little more of his Southern drawl out during this one, especially in choruses. Overall, this was a fun song for the band to experiment with in studio!
Mac’s Songwriting Notes: There isn’t much to the lyrics or structure of this song, and that was 100% on purpose. Sometimes, I enjoy writing something that’s silly or easy to play and sing, or both. I also enjoyed the note of dirtiness that I brought in here and there. Ultimately, this song is about trying to woo a woman to bed, and since I’ve been married or in a monogamous relationship for pretty much all of my song-writing career, it’s safe to say I was thinking about how to woo my sweetie, which is a good thing for us fellers to ponder, I do believe.
Lyrics
Listen, ah, tell me girl, I want to listen
Whether you’re happy or you’re bitchin
Ah, tell me girl, I want to listen
Go on
You give me something I can hold on
I get the feeling this is on
A-roller-shaking like a bonbon
Come on
Soup A days
Here again
Soup A days
Here again
Big Grin
You make me wonder what you’re wishin
I hope you’re dreamin of some big sin
That we could do if I’d just listen
Come on
Soup A days
Here again
Soup A days
Here again
Soup A
Soup A
Soup A
Soup A
Soup A
Soup A
Soup
Soup A days
Here again
Soup A days
Here again
Ahhhh
